The name Aquiares means "land between rivers" in the Heutar indigenous language. Aquiares Estate is the largest farm in Costa Rica and home to 1,800 people in the surrounding community. Alfonso Robelo came to the region in the 1980s and immediately began building community on the enchanting slopes of the Turrialba volcano.
Alfonso challenged the status quo by helping farm employees buy houses, strengthening the community. This has made the region more stable and a model for sustainable agriculture, even achieving carbon neutrality at the farm by offsetting all emissions.
