A Resolution Meant to Bring More Joy to Our Lives

A Resolution Meant to Bring More Joy to Our Lives

Often, we think of New Year’s Resolutions as a way to better ourselves that involves doing something we’ve avoided: flossing our teeth, eating more kale, or sticking with a budget. What if, instead, we set a resolution meant to bring more joy to our lives that involved doing something we already like—and what if that something is drinking coffee?

For a fun way to start 2026 to help detract from things that might be unpleasant, set a coffee resolution. Most of us drink the same coffee day after day. Is there a way you could brighten your morning by finding a way to improve your daily drink?

Here are some things you can experiment with that might help you determine a cup of coffee that you enjoy even more than what you’re currently drinking.

Try a new brew method.
Do you normally just press “start” on your automatic coffee maker? What if you tried a Saturday morning Aeropress, or a Sunday brunch pour over? There are some manual methods for making coffee that are really easy (here’s looking at you, cold brew) that you might find both quick and more delicious than your daily batch brew

Experiment with new beans.
If you start every day with a rich cup of Breakfast Blend, ask yourself what you like about it. Is it balanced and roasty, with a smooth finish? Is it a nice combination of bitter and sweet? Once you notice what you like about your coffee, investigate if there’s another roast that sounds good to you. Most coffee has tasting notes as descriptors, so if you’ve learned you like a robust, earthy coffee, maybe branch out to a single origin Sumatran or try a blend of Indonesian and Central American. Maybe you’ll hate it, maybe you’ll love it even more, but breaking out of your routine is the best way to determine if there’s a coffee around that meets your needs even better.

Bring coffee to different day parts.
Most of us have a cup of coffee in the morning to activate our brains, but there’s a place for coffee throughout the day. If you like a black cup of filter coffee when you wake up, maybe try cold brew in the afternoon. Or look into decaf options and see if you might enjoy a cup of coffee with dessert or an evening snack. Snag a shot of espresso with your lunch to prevent a post-meal energy crash. Coffee has noted health benefits, so consider yourself working on healthy lifestyle goals by adding a second (or third, or fifth) cup of coffee to your day.

Explore different coffee cultural practices.
In Cuba, it’s common for very strong coffee to be whisked with sugar to create a frothy, sweet treat. In Ethiopia, coffee is often served alongside popcorn that’s roasted right along with the beans over a fire. In Thailand, coffee is often filtered with a cloth rather than paper and served with sweetened condensed milk. You don’t just have to stick with brewed coffee with some cream and sugar—in Tibet yak butter is often added to brewed coffee for a hint of salt and richness that cuts a strong brew, and in Mexico cinnamon and other spices are brewed in coffee to bring out warming flavors.

Make a New Year’s resolution that you enjoy keeping. Coffee can be a beautiful highlight of the day, and exploring ways to appreciate yours even more can mean better mornings in 2026.
