Choosing Iced Options

Choosing Iced Options

Now that we’re in the midst of summer, many of us are looking for ways to cool off. Luckily, we can make frosty cups of iced coffee for those afternoons when we need a pick-me-up. Whether it be cold brew, flash-chilled pour overs, iced espresso, or another method you favor, there are multiple ways to enjoy quality coffee on ice.

Once you’ve perfected your brew method, you might wonder which coffee you should choose. As with everything in coffee, much of this comes down to personal preference.

Dark roasts can be a good option if you’re learning to work with iced coffee, because dark roast beans are more porous and easy to extract flavor compounds from. With denser light roast beans, you sometimes need a nuanced hand to get your grind the perfect size or the dispersion of your water correct. A quality dark roast in a cold brew will be quite forgiving, and offer a robust flavor that stands up to cream.

Speaking of cream, if you plan to use a milk base in your coffee, whether it be dairy or non-dairy, then a darker roast will provide a stronger, richer flavor that will compliment the milk. If you prefer a coffee with low acidity, then choose a dark roast. Something like our Sumatra Mandheling or Vienna roast will provide a hearty, earthy brew that works well with whatever additions you like to throw in.

Lighter roasts, while sometimes finicky to work with, can offer explosive fruit flavors with exciting complexity. Our new Myanmar Shwe Yi Mon Estate is tart and bright with red currant and raspberry notes that shine in a cold preparation. Ethiopian coffees, like our Basha Bekele, that highlight citrus and berry flavors, are especially refreshing on a hot day. Try the Basha or our Misty Valley for a sweet, bright treat with a smooth mouthfeel.

If you’re interested in exploring other coffees, a honey-processed option like Costa Rica Aquieres Estate will linger nicely on your palate and taste sweet and balanced. Ask yourself what you’re looking for in your coffee, either a light refreshment or a smooth treat, and then choose your coffee accordingly. If you need help, check out the coffee’s tasting notes or talk to your barista to find a coffee that meets your needs. There’s no right or wrong option for iced coffee—it’s all about what suits you!
